Beginning a New Chapter for the Hollands

I want to fill you in on some things that are happening in my life and our family.

Last August, we took our family vacation after our High School Ministries Regeneration camp. Being in the Rocky Mountains in southwest Colorado was great for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was not having cell coverage or internet unless we went into town.

One day while the boys were enjoying the river behind the cabin, Kim and I had one of those life-examination conversations. I remember looking at her and saying that I’ve been feeling a strong pull on my heart to become a senior pastor sooner rather than “someday.” Kim’s response was that she had been anticipating that conversation for several years.

At that point, we decided just to pray about it and see what the Lord would do. In October I was contacted by a church to consider filling their vacant senior pastor position. After talking with them for a few weeks, it was clear that it was not the right fit for either them or me.

But this process had fanned the flame of desire in my heart to become a senior pastor.

I tell you all that to bring you up to speed on where things are now.

After much prayer, discussions with Kim, and interaction with the elders, I’ve come to the decision that it is time to venture out from Grace Community Church to serve a church in a senior pastor role. It’s important to express that this transition is not due to any discontentment or dissatisfaction with my current ministry. Several factors have led to this decision. Along with my desire to be a senior pastor, I’ve also had much input from Pastor John and our elders. I will always be thankful for how God has led me through these men.

Over the past couple of months I have been approached by a few churches to consider being a candidate for their senior pastor position. The timing of these contacts has perfectly coincided with my desires.

Our family, along with our elders, is asking God to bring along the right church for me to serve in the very near future. We are praying and hoping to move “somewhere” by this summer.

With that in mind, can we ask you to pray with us and for us?

When I think of walking out of Grace Church for the last time as one of her pastors, I can hardly take another breath. But at the same time, when Kim and I think of taking all we’ve learned from serving here to another place, we get very excited.

This process raises a lot of questions, like where are we looking and what will the transition here look like. I have answers for some. Others I don’t know. And others are not wise to answer yet.

What I can say is that I am daily amazed by God’s grace in adopting me as His son, and in calling me to be a pastor.

Thanks for your prayers for my family and me!

  3. That’s wonderful news Rick. I’m really excited for you and thankful for your ministry to me through the college and the seminary. I’m sure that you will be missed at Grace, but I’m excited for what God has for you and your family in the future.

  4. Hey Rick,

Man, we will certainly be praying for you and your family during this time. Thank you again for all that you have done for me personally and the godly example you are to me. I look forward to seeing what God has for you all.

  5. Rick,

Your faithfulness to the Lord and Grace Church is astounding. Your years there have been a ministry not only to the sheep you serve, but to many of us throughout the world. I often say, to folks when referencing something you have said, “Rick is one of my favorite preachers.”

It is good to know how to pray for you and your family. I will make an effort to do so more often and with greater knowledge of what is going on in the lives of the Hollands.

    in Christ,

  7. Rick,

I will specifically be praying for your boys. I remember at 13 what this change felt like. At first I did not want to leave Grace. There was pain and bitterness, but looking back 10 years later i can tell you that I am amazed daily at where the Lord has brought me and how he has blessed me. I made new friends and now i can say that God made me a new home!

I am excited to see how your sons will grow and how God will test them to bring about perserverance. I will pray that they will be blessing to your ministry and an encouragement to you through the hard times. I pray that they will come to have the same love and passion for the truth that you have. I pray that the Lord will grant them discernment when I wandered and wisdom where I strayed.

I am excited to see where the Lord takes you and your Family.

  8. This is definitely bittersweet. It is exciting to hear of how the Lord may use you in ministry, but at the same time I feel the grief of Grace Church as they send out one of their good men.
Praying for you and your family, and the work the Lord has in store for you.

  9. Rick,
Excited for what the Lord has for you and your family. The great adventure with our Lord continues. Rachel and I will be praying for you all. Whatever church you land at will be blessed to have a shepherd like you!

  10. Rick,

I’m excited for you and your precious family. You’re a great pastor, husband, father, and friend and now you get to share that with a new congregation. Julie and I will be praying for you, Kim and the boys.

  11. Mary and I will be praying for you and Kim and the boys. New beginnings are always filled with a bitter-sweet that only God can bring us through with hearts still filled with joy, wonder and awe! Really anticipating what God will do next through your untiring ministry to the Body. MN sure could use a man of God such as yourself…but your blood may be too thin! Praying….

  12. I think what Michael _meant_ to say is that Colorado is a great, great place 😉

  13. Rick: Amazing to see how far the Lord has brought you! I will be pleased and honored to pray for you (as often as my aging mind allows!)

    Blessings to you Rick!

  14. Rick, this is long time coming. We will be praying for you guys. I knew this day would come. God is at work in and out of you. Wherever you land… There will be an explosion of Gods word to be heard! You reach people in a way that no one could ignore. I’m excited for you. I remember when you first got to Cali with all your Tennessee drawl, fresh of the farm… You have come a long way! and you’re not done!!!

  15. We are so excited to see how God will use you and Kim at another church as a Senior Pastor for HIS GLORY! Exciting times! The Richardsons’ are praying for the Hollands. Love you all loads.

  16. Hello Pastor Rick,

This is Zephaniah from your Expository Preaching I class. I did not know about this new change of direction until I got news today in class from some students. I can honestly say that I have only been in your class for a couple of weeks and you have been an encouragement to me. I pray that the Lord will use you to bless others in the new church you will one day pastor as you have been a blessing to me. Grace. Romans 1:16.

  17. Dr. Holland,

What exciting times for you and your family. You know, the Inland Empire would welcome you warmly: specifically, Rancho Cucamonga. It is in need of a TMS-like seminary too… 🙂

I’ll be praying for you too…

  18. Just one suggestion… let any church interested in you know that you will need a week in June to travel to the Resolved conference to speak! I have brought a group from our church in St. Louis to the conference every year and it would not be the same without you! Deal? We will be praying for you and your precious family.

  19. The young people at Grace Church need you. They love and respect you. May God’s will be done in your life.

  20. Dear Rick,

All locale jousting aside, we are praying for you and your family as you embark on this exciting new chapter in your lives. We look forward to giving Him all the praise for how he leads and works all things for His glory and your blessing.

  21. Oh Wow… well i can’t think of another word better than bittersweet, as Jennifer said. It was over 10 years ago that I learned about the majesty of God through your teaching at Crossroads, in college. I’ll be looking forward to reading & following your blog which i just found out about today. Btw, It’s interesting to know that my husband and i aren’t the only ones that have ‘life-examination conversations’ on vacations… Will pray for God’s direction for your family! (and holding out hope that there may still be opportunities to hear you preach even if you move..hint hint resolved, etc:)

  22. Will and I are praying for the Lord’s clear direction for your family. Whatever church decides to call you will so fortunate. We have appreciated your accessibility, honesty and godliness. Thank you for the role you have played in the life of our family.

  23. Rick,

You will continue to be in our prayers. You could always move to Freeport (take over my role) and i could be your associate pastor? 🙂

You have been a blessing to so many people (past and present). I am certain Jesus will continue to use you in the future.

  24. Dear Rick,
We go back a long way….Will pray for you for God’s perfect will and perfect place for you and your family….

It has been a pleasure to see you grow…

    Blessings, Joy & Ray Hall

  25. (Psalm 84:5-6) Blessed is the man whose strength is in You,
Whose heart is set on PILGRIMAGE.
6 As they pass through the Valley of Baca,
    They make it a spring;
The rain also covers it with pools.
    7 They go from strength to strength;
Each one appears before God in Zion.

Praising our glorious GOD for sowing and harvesting HIS seed through your hands, Rick and Kim, and that we have received grace to partake of it by you and with you, through CHRIST JESUS our LORD! Praying for HIS clear direction for your family, HIS grace toward your sons as HIS faithful slaves and comforted we’ll have eternity with you all!

  26. We thank the Lord for you and Kim and your influence on our family. The Lord has used you mightily in so many lives. He has been preparing you. Each day is a gift from God. We will be praying for the Lord to direct you as you seek His will. God is so faithful!!! and so mighty!!! and He will go before you!!!
We’ll be praying for you and Kim and your boys – that you all will love the Lord with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul, with all your strength, all the days of your lives.

  27. Dear Rick,
Being members at Grace Community for 31 yrs we have seen many young men grow to this point and move on to minister all they have learned in another place. This has always been the heart of our Pastor John. Although this is difficult for us, as we get attached and have been so blessed, it is always exciting to see how God works this all out. He will work it all out for you and your family and we will look forward to see where he leads you. Thanking God for your ministry here at Grace and praying for his direction in your life.
Psa. 37:4 Delight thyself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

    In Christ,
    George and Linda

  28. We would love to have you in Orange County!!! Praying hard for this!

  29. Rick,

I have appreciated your ministry from afar and been blessed the few times I’ve heard God’s word through you at TMC, TMS, Shepherds’ Conference, and once or twice through Crossroads.

I’ve been praying for First Baptist Church of Hollywood right next to the glitz and glamor of Hollywood and Highland. It would be a great answer to our church’s prayer to put an undershepherd like you in a church in our city like that one.

I know their somewhat fond of TMS grads, but they are also strongly baptistic (as I am).

    Your brother in Christ,

  30. Greetings to you and your family!

My name is Erin Loganbill and I found this site just by searching the web….my husband Jim, and I, and our boys, Daniel (17) and Peter (13) attend Mission Road Bible Church in Prairie Village, Kansas.

    We are praying for you!
